Let’s Create a Walkable Munster - Together.
What is the Calumet-Ridge Streetscape Plan?
This forward-looking plan provides recommendations for improvements to an essential thoroughfare of Munster-Calumet Ave and Ridge Road (from State Line to Columbia Ave). It is the product of a year-long collaborative effort among many community stakeholders: the Advisory Committee, Town Council, and staff, multiple discussions throughout the community during events and workshops, and online feedback opportunities.
The strategic planning process was facilitated by Teska Associates, Inc., a team of professional community planners, urban designers, and landscape architects.
What concerns and opportunities are the plan meant to address?
Community polls provided key insights into residents’ and business owners’ impressions of the current state of Ridge Road. The broad consensus among stakeholders is that Munster’s attractive features are generally masked by auto-oriented corridors that lack welcoming entrances, safe and comfortable pedestrian and bike routes, greening, sustainable practices, and a sense of place.
How does the plan address these concerns?
The plan’s recommendations support community vibrancy and iprove connectivity by transforming Ridge Road into a walkable downtown area via reduced travel lanes, expanded sidewalks, multi-use paths, and landscaping.
The plan also prioritizes sustainability by increasing bike and pedestrian access, incorporating permeable pavements, rain gardens, tree canopies, and native plantings.
